Driving in New Zealand

  • Drive on the left side of the road. Stay left unless passing on motorways.
  • Legal breath alcohol concentration is 0.05% – avoid drinking any alcohol if you're driving.
  • Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers.
  • General Speed Limits: Urban: 30-50 km/h Rural: 80-100 km/h Highways: 100–110 km/h
  • Parking Rules

  • Park in the direction of traffic.
  • LAvoid yellow lines, loading zones, bus stops, and taxi stands.
  • Paid parking is common – check signs for time and payment information.
  • Be aware of parking in freedom camping restricted/prohibited areas – infringement notices may apply
  • Weather and Road Conditions

    NZ weather changes rapidly – check forecasts before traveling, we often have four seasons in one day! Be cautious of snow and icy roads in autumn and winter (May–October). Many rural roads are narrow, unmarked or unsealed – drive with care. Expect longer travel times than GPS suggests.

    Wildlife and Nature

    Watch for wildlife crossing roads, especially in rural areas.
    Stick to marked trails when hiking.
    In summer, use insect repellent for mosquitoes and sandflies.

    Connectivity

    Mobile coverage is good in towns but can limited in rural and remote areas. Download offline maps in advance.

    Fuel and Supplies

    Refuel your camper regularly, especially in remote regions.
    Grocery stores are mainly in larger towns – plan accordingly.

    Respect Local Culture

    Be respectful when visiting Māori cultural sites and marae.

  • Be aware of passing lanes on highways.
  • Purchase a travel insurance policy which covers medical, trip, and vehicle issues.
